Ambekka Temple Of Sri Lanka

It is mentioned in history that the Ambakke temple located in Udunuwara region of Sri Lanka's Kandy district was built during the reign of King Wickramabahu III (1371-1394 AD) who reigned in the Gampola kingdom.

this is a big event for the wood carvings. King Vikramabahu had this temple built and dedicated to God Kataragama. It is known that a local deity called Devata Bandara is also worshiped at this place. This temple consists of three parts namely the sanctuary, the dance hall and the Heavisi Mandapam.

According to an ancient legend, the wife of King Vikramabahu III; It is said that Henakanda Biso Bandara woke up from a strange dream in which he appeared and asked to build a temple for him and as a result this was built. Even though the original temple is not visible to the people, it can be said that it was a three-storied building.

All the places except the sanctuary are made of wood. The wooden pillars roof, beams, rafters and door frames in the tower halls are all made with beautiful wood carvings. Because of those wood carvings, the Embekka temple is famous for wood carvings. The bases of the pillars are octagonal in shape. and their tops end in the shape of four leaves in a square box. This is also a specialty of that construction. The roof of the temple is a fine example of old wooden architecture.
