POLONNARUWA.

Polonnaruwa is generally considered to be the second capital city in Sri Lanka. Polonnaruwa was chosen as a capital city by Soline from 985 BC. Soli's rule, which began with King Raja Raja, lasted for 70 years. Even before Soli conquered Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura kings had developed Polonnaruwa as a suburb. Those kings developed Polonnaruwa as a city due to Mahaweli water throughout the year and fertile soil suitable for cultivation. For this reason, it is said in the history that King Vasabha, King Mahasen, King Upatissa the first, King Agrabodhi the second built tanks in this area and made many irrigation systems.

Later Anuradhapura kings have focused on Polonnaruwa as a focal area. Another king who chose Polonnaruwa as a final city based on political and economic reasons is Maha Vijayabahu (AD: 1055-1110) who saved the kingdom from Soli rule.

He repaired the temples destroyed by Soline and laid the foundation of the statue of Samadhi. King Maha Parakramabahu who reigned from (AD 1153-1186) made Polonnaru Samadhi statue the most valuable place.

King Nishanka Malla (AD 1187-1196) was able to preserve the economic and political harmony created by King Maha Parakramabahu.

Then due to the weak rulers who took power, the economic as well as the administrative situation fell apart.

Taking advantage of that opportunity, Kalinga Magha conquered and destroyed Polonnaruwa in AD 1214. State governance shifted to the south-west. The whole of Rajara was like a forest. It became a forest. Antiquities were destroyed. Antiquities were explored again during the British colonial period. They started the Department of Archeology and preserved the artifacts. Currently, the work is being carried forward by the Central Cultural Fund.

Polonnaruwa, the medieval capital city, has bequeathed us an important period in the history of Sri Lanka. In it, there are many works of talented artists that reflect the unity of the Sinhalese and Tamil nations as well as the Buddhist Hindu religious harmony.

I present to you information about some of the famous designs in the world from among those designs that are currently in ruins with photographs.
